Masquerade Ball at La Herradura raises €1069

LIQUID GOLD AT LA HERRADURA RESTAURANT

Liqor 43 glasses were clinking and conversation was flowing in La Herradura Restuarant Los Montesinos for THE MASQUERADE BALL in aid of the charity Paul Cunningham Nurses.

The Courtyard in La Herradura Los Montesinos was "sold out" with over 70 people attending the Masquerade Ball and around another 70 in the main restaurant made it a very lively evening.

PDQ provided the entertainment and as usual after the meal there was no sitting down.

The guests had a four course meal with welcome drinks and liqueur coffees provided by Licor 43, all for an amazing €19.50!

Homemade desserts were provided by Tony Wellstood winner of last month's make a dessert competition, Katharine Ralph, Queen of Cakes, Jennie Lowe a great supporter and volunteer of PCN, Kim Herring from Pasty Shack, Av Londres La Marina (If you get chance you need to try Kim's special €5.50 Christmas lunch!) and Maddie Pinfold from Ladies who Lunch.

Maddie who was ‘volunteered' at the very last minute made her speciality, Bread and Butter Pudding.

La Herradura joined in the fun and offered a prize of Dinner for Two with Cava for the dessert that ran out first and Maddie was the winner with her bread and butter pudding so although she could not be at the Masquerade Ball this year she will now be able to enjoy a meal for two at La Herradura Restaurant.

With mince pies and chocolate mints to finish off, Licor 43 were present to give every guest a Christmas gift of Liquid Gold to take home and they then also arranged for everyone to be able to send a Christmas gift of Cuarenta Y Tres and a recipe book to a friend in the U.K.!

Getting back to the entertainment ‘Every Time They Walk In The Room' should be the signature tune for Pete, Izzy and Lee who are PDQ, because this band really do pull in the numbers for PCN every time they walk in the room!

Graeme Mykal from Absolute Magic was as usual Absolutely Magical as many people watched open mouthed as he performed his close up magic!

And finally the regular Saturday Night Flamenco Dances, Virginea Gea and Javier Nunez added to the magic of the night by doing an extra performance for the guests at The Masquerade Ball.

We are already taking bookings for Next Year which will be Saturday 8th December and not forgetting our Something Red Ball at The Marjal which will be on Friday 25th May 2012.

Paul Cunningham Nurses would like to thank Francisco Lidon and Chef Aurora Torres, and all of the wonderful staff. Also everyone for their kind donations of raffle prizes and auction lots, with special thanks to Johnsons Supermarket in Quesada, Sierra Golf, Coen Motorsport, Hair OTT, SAMM for 4 Boat trips, Capital Hair and Beauty, Caroline Konig who made a stunning 3 tier Masquerade Cake, Alajandros Restaurant and Looking Good Boutique both in La Zenia.

With a generous bid for an auction lot support once again from Cuarenta Y Tres took the final total raised to €1069!

Photographs are by Ken Taylor who very kindly made a special visit to La Heradura for Paul Cunningham Nurses on his way to yet another event! If you would like to see the photographs go to www.kentaylorphotographer.com

CHEERS CHEERS AND MORE CHEERS!

This amazing Bar in Eagles Nest Villamartin is a big bar with a very big heart and in December "Light up A Life" attracted over 80 people to Cheers Bar to enjoy a three hour programme of music and dance.

Jon Summer was the fabulous MC and singer too and The Variety Show Group led by the very talented Eileen Carpenter were first on to sing a wonderful collection of Christmas songs and Christmas Carols.

The audience were encouraged to join in and join in they certainly did.

Graeme Mykal made an appearance once again for Paul Cunningham Nurses and entertained Mums, Dads and Children with his fantastic table magic and his incredible balloon magic too!

Martin had the idea of "Light Up A Life" and along with his wife Dawn and brother and sister-in-law Rod and Sue the Fab Four worked so hard to make the event a huge success.

Jennie Lowe doing a silly Santa crazy raffle where it's the last 3 tickets called that are the winners, meant this event has already raised €238 for Paul Cunningham Nurses.

"Light Up A Life" will continue until Christmas Eve and anyone can go along to the bar and for just €1 as donation to Paul Cunningham Nurses they can write a message to put on the tree to remember a loved one and light a candle to put under the Christmas Tree.

Paul Cunningham Nurses would like to say a huge thank you to the owners, staff and customers of Cheers for making this event such a huge success. Not forgetting of course, Jon Summer, The Variety Show Group and Graeme Mykal who all very generously gave up their time to support the charity.

Caledonia Lodge Donation to Paul Cunningham Nurses

Mrs Win Duke, widow of the late Worshipful Master of the Caledonia Lodge  Ian Duke  presented a cheque for €1,500 to Susan Reader.
Ian sadly died while in Office in May.

Supporting Win Duke at the presentation was the late Worshipful Master's Charity Steward W.Bro Richard Beken. One thousand euros was collected by The Lodge at a number of charitable functions, raffles and collections and a further €500 was donated to the charity by The Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia.

Susan Reader said: "I had the pleasure of talking to Ian when he called me to say he had chosen to support Paul Cunningham Nurses and I met with him in La Marina just before he took up office. Ian was a very nice man and very proud to be Worshipful Master. Paul Cunningham Nurses are very grateful to receive this donation as this money will help us to provide essential nursing care in the community. We would like to say thank you once again to The Caladonia Freemasons Lodge as we have had tremendous support from them previously and we would also like to wish all of the Lodges well with their future fundraising project to provide four fully equipped ambulances for the community."

Bonfire Night goes with a Bang at Casa La Pedrera

Jenni Ray and her team at the fabulous Grand Designs house braved the threatened rain and the high winds to put on a fantastic Bonfire Night event, with a full house crowd of 700 people.

The afternoon started in glorious sunshine with a flags and pistols display from Los Pistoleros which was followed by line dancing and and a Wild West saloon bar brawl from Los Pistoleros.

As darkness fell under a spectacular sunset over the lake, the bonfire was lit and the guys thrown to the flames.

Finally after more line dancing the fireworks lit up the sky.

Paul Cunningham Nurses were invited to organise a raffle, which raised over €500 for the charity.

We would like to thank everyone who bought tickets and By Your Side who generously donated prize for us to raffle.

The entertainment continued after the fireworks for those who could brave the cold for another couple of hours!

A massive thank you to Jenni and her team for a successful night and to everyone who contributed to PCN by buying raffle tickets.

We do have a couple of unclaimed raffle prizes, the ticket numbers are  13 Yellow and 192 Orange

FASHION MANIA AT LA HERRADURA IN LOS MONTESINOS

How time flies and it's a while ago now but the Fabulous Fashion Show at La Herradura Restaurant at the end of last month raised over €500 for Paul Cunningham Nurses.

It was like The House of Elliott on the Costa Blanca South as two fashion boutiques joined together for the very first time!
Louise Brandley from Looking Good Boutique in La Zenia and Catherine Allen from Gigi's Boutique in Quesada could be arch enemies BUT they joined forces to produce the most amazing and entertaining Fashion Show, whilst there is some crossover in Day Wear the two boutiques are quite different.

Looking Good Boutique is a great place to go for "Mother of the Bride" and elaborate evening wear, lovely day wear, golf wear and soon elegant shoes whilst Catherine as she proved on the day is also an expert on fashion day wear and does have a lovely selection of elegant evening wear and is fastidious about what suits you she is also the ultimate and absolute expert on underwear with a bra fitting service to make the most or the least of what you've got! Especially popular are her "Magic Knickers" So while Louise has the Magic hold you up, pull you in with Magic Jeans, Catherine can provide you with stunning underwear AND Magic Knickers, these two very entrepreneurial ladies have joined together to make a winning team!

They will be getting together to support Paul Cunningham Nurses again at La Herradura in Los Montesinos in early Spring so look out for details of the next Magical Fashion Show at La Herradura Restaurant in 2012!

Stop press... Catherine will be making an appearance at some of Louise's shows and underwear will soon be on sale in Looking Good Boutique!!

Magic Night at The Indian Ocean raises over €250 for Paul Cunningham Nurses

On Sunday 20th November The Indian Ocean in Dona Pepa was buzzing, wine, water and welcome drinks were flowing!

Not to mention a fair few beers too! For the special price of €12 more than 60 guests were welcomed with a glass of Cava, there was a choice of six curries, three side dishes and everyone had rice and nan bread and water on all the tables was free.

There was a quiz on India and their culture, not surprisingly one of the questions was - which is the favourite Indian dish eaten in the U.K. - this is Chicken Tikka Masala!!

Graeme Mykal, the amazing magician was there to entertain everyone with table magic and he also hosted two games of Play Your Cards Right which resulted in someone from almost every table having at least one go.

The winners of the quiz and play your cards right all won vouchers for meals for two in local restaurants, one of course being the Indian Ocean.

This night was so popular it may well become a regular event. If Indian is your "cup of tea" look out for further special nights in The Indian Ocean.

The Indian Ocean will continue to support Paul Cunningham Nurses and have launched their version of the Christmas voucher.

in future they will be making regular donations to Paul Cunningham Nurses and they will be a collection point for the mobile ‘phone recycling, so if you have an old mobile ‘phone tucked away in a drawer somewhere, please drop it in to The Indian Ocean.

For the vouchers you pay €10 and they add a €1 making the vouchers worth €11, the vouchers sold in multiples of €11 would make a nice Christmas present for any Indian loving friends!

Looking Good Models were Hot Stuff!!

Over 50 ladies and a sprinkling of gentlemen attended the Fabulous Fashion Show by Looking Good Boutique at La Herradura in Los Montesinos.

Organiser Jane, compare Katie and six models all did a sterling job as it was Hot Hot Hot and although never sure whether it is better to model swimwear in the snow or fur coats in the desert, these ladies really deserved medals as it was very hot and there was not one complaint .

As well as Fabulous Fashion there was Fun and Laughter too with one of the Restaurant owners, Francisco Lidon who gave two extra prizes on the day, dinner for 2 at La Herradura Restaurant and then 3 special cookery lessons at La Herradura, this prize was won by Heather Meston, the one lady in the audience who was a home economics teacher back in England, so the follow up story on this should be quite entertaining!

Special thanks to Lorraine from Hair OTT in Los Balcones who were invited to come and talk to the ladies about hair consultations and holistic treatments such as Indian Head Massage. Also stepping in at literally the eleventh hour, Mary and Tracey from Pinks Hair and Beauty in Benijofar who came to give advice on day and evening make up and to do a makeover on one lady picked from the audience.

Many thanks too to TKO radio who constantly advertise all of our events for us

Our raffle on Friday with prizes from Looking Good Boutique, Vanilla, Body Harmony, OTT, Kalma Days, Nails by Landis and a special 1-2-1 Pilates Class with Sharon helped to bring the total raised in just 2 hours to €525!

We were also delighted to welcome Taffeta from Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre who has become the mascot of Looking Good Boutique.

La Herradura Restaurant
Carvery
December 12, 2010

Sunday 12th of December put La Herradura on the map for the Brits.  La Herradura Restaurant in Los Montesinos was the home of one of the most successful events of 2010 for Paul Cunningham Nurses.  Along with an amazing atmosphere last Sunday the restaurant put on one of it's most daring menus ever, when it provided an English Carvery for the first time, for well in excess of 140 patrons that included a goodly number of Spanish, sampling an English Carvery for the very first time.

The building is well over 300 years old and was a perfect setting displaying many of its historical features. We were entertained throughout the day by the talented Susanne James singing country music and putting us all in the mood for the day she was followed by famous Ritchie and he was followed by Javier Nuñez a wonderful Spanish Flamenco Dancer who brought the Spanish theme to life, and to round off the entertainment we had the amazing Cathy Carson who got everyone to their feet with a wonderful Christmas theme.

A huge thank you to all of these artists who gave their time free in support of Paul Cunningham Nurses.  We would like to thank the organisers of the new Moncayo Market for their generous contribution to the raffle; the raffle along with a generous percentage of the ticket price raised the wonderful amount of over €900 euros.

Jennifer Cunningham would also like to thank the ‘Two Franciscos' who own La Herradura Restaurant and their staff for their hard work and support and many thanks also from Jennifer to all of the artists and helpers of Paul Cunningham Nurses.  Jennifer also expressed that she hoped they will continue supporting the charity as it is her intention to expand to cover a much wider area.

There is a fantastic a la Carte menu at La Herradura and you can also sample their exquisite cuisine with a special menu del dia for just €12. This is a very special place to go yourselves and also to take your visitors - Francisco 1 and Francisco 2 will be delighted to welcome you.

La Herradura Restaurant, located in a historic Old Farmhouse has an interesting history dating back to when it was first built in 1888, for instance in 1920, when there was a train line built connecting Vega Baja with Alicante, top politicians from all over the country converged on the area for the inauguration of the new line.  Unfortunately, the train was derailed leaving the politicians stranded for two days. They took refuge in La Herradura which soon changed from a farmhouse to an inn. The restaurant's wine cellar dating back to the 19th century is just one of the many features of the restaurant.  To find out about special dates for wine tasting call the restaurant for details.  La Herradura will be demonstrating some of their fine cuisine at The Moncayo Market on Saturday 18th December - why not come along and taste for yourselves!  You will also find a huge selection of merchandise and will definitely find some unusual last minute gifts.

Bonfire Night
at
Casa Pedrera

bonfire night casa pedrera

Paul Cunningham Nurses wish to thank  Jenni Ray from Casa La Pedrera

(The house was featured in Grand Designs)

for organising a 5th of November treat for us all.

It was hard to judge how many people were there as the event was spread over such a wide area but it was estimated at over 500 visitors, with our Susan on the Gate to see most if not all of the activities that were going on.

It was like being in the Wild West with so many Cowboys and Girls and  everyone looking so authentic.

Sue Briffa and her followers from Dance Ranch led the Line Dancing in the main arena to all the traditional country music, which was provided by TKO Radio, with 60 to 70 each time in the line up for the Dancing.

Hay rides for the Kids a Riffle Range - well it was only to be expected for the Cowboys.

The smell of cooking from the Ranch Burgers and Chilli filed the air.

Paul Cunningham Nurses raffle on the night managed to raise 314 euros with more funds to come and to end the evening there was a delightful firework display that lit up the sky with the beautiful lake as a backdrop.

Bobby's Bar Busts the Barometer!

Fantastic Support from PCN from Bobby's Bar in Quesada

bobbys bar buffet sep 10bobbys bar presentation sep 10 cropbobbys bar raffle sep 10 crop

May to September might have a familiar ring as it was a comedy series back in the 80's but for Bobby's Bar in Quesada May to September was 180 x 10!!!

Regular darts players Tony, Keith, Brian R, Johnno, Dave, Anna, Dennis, OJ and Vee were led by Brian W and along with the generosity of the owners of Bobby's Bar Lynne and Craig and their fabulous bar staff Libbie and Sharon who are absolutely great at selling the weekly raffle tickets plus lots of holidaymakers who have also joined in, together they have raised over €1,800 for Paul Cunningham Nurses, to be exact the final figure is a fantastic €1880.84!

Bobby's Bar is a relatively small bar in Quesada but one with a big heart and very generous patrons. The money was raised to support Paul Cunningham Nurses and was presented to Susan Reader from PCN on Thursday 30 September which was the final fun darts night at Bobby's Bar for 2010.   The barometer on the wall showed the running total and had to be extended as they raised almost twice their initial target of €1000!  Bobby's Bar is well worth a visit and can be found is next to Sunseekers Properties and opposite Quesada Town Hall and Recreational Area.

Brian W who is no stranger to fundraising himself in the U.K. was the organiser of Thursday night darts at Bobby's Bar, Shanghai, Leave It, Halve It and finally Blind Killer were the games played through the months and after trophies were presented to Dave the winner with 598 points and runner up Johnno with 546 (Brian himself was no slouch at 538 closely followed by Keith with 536)  Bobby's Bar provided a splendid complimentary buffet for everyone and this was prepared and beautifully presented by Lesley who is one of the chefs providing the extensive menu on offer.

Now serious darts start from October through to May and although they have enjoyed the fun and games organised by Brian the players are looking forward to some serious dart playing in the coming months.

Susan from Paul Cunningham Nurses who went along and was able to meet most of the players on the final night said: "This is an amazing amount of money raised by a small group of people and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved!"

Happy Wanderers Golf Day

Where have you wandered to?

happy wanderers golf meal1 resized happy wanderers golf presentation1 resized

Susan Reader took her family along to La Finca to meet Captain of THE HAPPY WANDERERS golf society, Mick Elliott.   There were a few stragglers but the group is aptly named - this very lively group are all very happy and very welcoming.  It was the Captain's decision to support Paul Cunningham Nurses but it felt like it was a unanimous decision a sSusan was presented with a grand total of €654.58 from Mick and with his wife Julia taking on the role of official photographer a good time was had by everyone. Susan did not see any scorecards but a few cryptic comments from Mick led her to believe he had not played his best game ever!

The money donated was made up from monies raised in a golf day the previous Monday between Torrevieja and The Happy Wanderers played at Roda Golf, Mick said that Roda Golf put together an excellent package, money was also raised at The Happy Wanderers Captain's Charity Day held at their home course at La Finca, a donation from Fred Hook and Julia's coin collection from the last five years!

If you are interested to join a golf club and would like to know more about THE HAPPY WANDERERS do give them a call on 679 786 979 you will be sure of a warm reception.

Many thanks to Captian Mick and Julia, Dave and to John Smith currently Vice Captain and IT man as he is the cyber sender of photographs! (due to take the Captain role next year) and to all of the member of both societies.  Hopefully, in conjunction with THE HAPPY WANDERERS and with masses of their help Paul Cunningham Nurses will be arranging an OPEN DAY early spring in 2011!  Perhaps our very own ‘motor trade' sponsored event in Costa Blanca!  Come on you dealerships, I would love to hear from you - forget PGA how about HWA!

Susan Reader with some of the winners

Due to a chance remark by Karon Love from Benijofar Post Room there was an art exhibition on Sunday at PROCOMOBEL furniture store.  Karen had told Susan Reader the fundraising manager that she thought there could be a lot of interest if she organised and art exhibition and she was right!  40 paintings were on show and the talent was extraordinary.

Many were local artists but some came from La Marina and as far as Crevilente. The winners of the experienced artists (over two years painting) were John Boak who won first prize with Pat and Susanne Sayers second and third and in the beginners section Louise Ryde won first, prize Felicity second and Karen herself sharing joint third with Margaret.

Diana Davies teacher at the cultural centre in Quesada and photographer on the day said she was over the moon to have two of her pupils take second and third prize in the beginners section.

Susan said: "I approached this event with some trepidation as it was unknown ground to me but I am pleased to say for a first, it was a huge success and already I am planning the next one probably for early November and hopefully as word gets around next time we will have even more artists."  Anyone interested in details of the next show please email Susan on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Bobby's Bar
Darts Night

One Hundred and Eighty at Bobby's Bar in Quesada- Not in this game!!

Out of the blue Susan Reader received a ‘phone call from Brian, Brian has been organising a weekly darts competition every Thursday evening at Bobby's Bar since May this year and so I went along to see just what goes on.  There were around 20 or so people and I was expecting to hear an Eric Bristow style 180! But no this is not traditional darts this is a whole load of FUN Fundraising.  Brian explained that there are 4 games Shanghai, Leave It, Halve It and finally Blind Killer, I must confess I got a bit lost in exactly how they all work but the main idea is that if you get something wrong you pay a forfeit and the money goes to support Paul Cunningham Nurses.

Every week they also have a raffle to swell the funds and they are well on the way to reach their target of €1000 by September as they are already at over €600.  If you would like to join them one Thursday or if you have something suitable for a raffle prize you can call Brian or Lynne on 689129643 or just pop along at anytime - you will be made most welcome by Lynne and Craig and their staff.  Bobby's Bar is next to Sunseekers Properties and opposite Quesada Town Hall and Recreational Area.

What a fun way to raise money on a Thursday night and so many people good natured about ‘loosing' their money!

Many thanks to Lynne and Craig and their staff Shaz & Libby who have all been consistent fundraisers for Paul Cunningham Nurses during the last year and always take everything we give them - Teddies, Easter Eggs, Carnations and Collection Tins!

Ladies Pamper Day

La Pedrera

Jason Scawthorne from JPS Fitness Centre, Catral talks to the Ladies

Casa La Pedrera, Grand Design House and Family Fun Centre's Jenni Ray was host to the Paul Cunningham Nurses Ladies Pamper Day.  It really is the oasis on your doorstep!  Thursday was a day of leisure and pleasure.  Thankfully after torrential rain the days before, the sun shone brightly as over 30 ladies arrived to ‘check in' and at 11.00a.m. the day started with a glass of pink champagne.

After a wander around the absolutely stunning garden and pool areas the ladies were all invited to book a short free massage treatment.  Jason Scawthorne from JPS Fitness in Catral chatted to small groups of ladies, he then went on to do a short presentation to about 25 of the ladies while the others were having various treatments.  Jenni followed on with a short talk about the area and the beautiful walks around the lake that she organises.  Jason picked up again after lunch, with several of the ladies braving and enjoying an impromptu Aquacise class.

Saphia was the STAR of the show - in five hours she did over 30 massage treatments! Saphia can be found at Hotel El Corazon Pueblo Lucero in Saphia's Beauty Room where she offers a complete range of beauty treatments, facials, all massage inc. Indian Head Massage, Hopi ear candling and much much more.  Saphia has a beautiful salon and welcomes everyone to go and have a look at any time although it is advisable to call her first just to make sure she is not in the middle of a treatment.

Many thanks to Michaela, famous for her beautiful clothes in ALL sizes and for organising for Margarite to come along to offer hair consultations and styling.  Jackie from The Hair Enhancers, brought along a beautiful selection of lightweight wigs and hair pieces.  This company provides a much needed service for some of our patients and they are so natural looking they are literally ‘shake and wear'.  Sue Campbell was there with a whole range of Bodyshop products and Louise Ryde a local artist who has some beautiful paintings came along to display her work and to answer any questions from budding artists.  At the 11th hour Christine from Bliss Hairdressers at La Finca sent along two hair stylists to add to the pampering.

Linda Sage from Quesada Wellbeing Centre who is also a beautician, offers a 12 week weight loss programme for just €40 - €3.33 a week!  Incredibly this also includes a weekly session on the toning tables!  Linda was fantastic, as with just hours to go we needed some last minute replacement therapists and Linda was able to help out, this lady is unflappable although I think her ‘phone was probably as hot as mine!  Liz who was coming as a guest with three friends, gave up her day of pampering to do several sets of Minx nails - thank you Liz! If you have not seen these yet look out for them they are incredible and if you would like more information email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

A fantastic day for all the ladies who came along, and €284 raised!

AND NOW FOR THE FREE ENTRY COMPETITION - just send your email address to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for your chance to win Afternoon Tea and Sandwiches at Casa La Pedrera - come and see this beautiful place for yourself.  Or you could win a relaxing Indian Head Massage with Saphia or some lovely Bodyshop products.

Our Something Red May Ball was a sell out with 142 Friends of Paul Cunningham Nurses who lit up the Marjal in a sea of red on the 21st May, we extend our thanks to everyone who attended and supported us, your generosity has meant that we have raised enough money for 450 further hours of Nursing Care.

The dance floor was jumping all night long thanks to the music provided by Linda and Paul the fab  ‘It Takes Two' Duo, who donated their time free of charge.

On the night we received some generous personal donations and some wonderful words written especially for us.  The tombola was a great success and thank you to all the local businesses and individuals who provided prizes.
