Whilst PCN were founded to help terminally ill patients, we do provide other nursing services, and our nurses are regularly at events to test blood pressure and blood sugar for a small donation.  Zella Rogers had her Blood Pressure tested at one of our Fun Days - this is her story

The Shame of the Building Trade, Praise for the Health Service

What shame the building trade brings to Spain, but the Spanish Government's Health Service that it delivers, most certainly makes up for it.

On Saturday May 29th, San Fulgencio's Cricket Club Match was held at La Marina Market Square and Paul Cunningham Nurses had a small stall offering blood pressure tests.  I stopped and thought ‘Yes why not, I have not had a blood pressure test for such a long time', and I am so glad that I did.  It was found that my blood pressure was extremely high.  After a couple of tests, to see if it had lowered with relaxation, it was recommended that I go to see my GP as soon as possible.

I went to see my doctor, at Torremendo surgery, where Dr. Eugene Ospior tried several well known methods over a period of some four hours to try to bring my blood pressure down, after which he recommended that I should attend the hospital in Torrevieja that afternoon where I was given a full examination and an ECG, and treatment.

I am so grateful to Paul Cunningham Nurses for being there and the Spanish Medical Heath Service for the professional care and consideration that they gave me.

With this in mind whenever you have the opportunity to have your Blood Pressure taken I would most certainly recommend it.

Paul Cunningham Nurses not only care for those with terminal illness, we can help with other nursing care, for example after surgery.

Our nurses began visiting Margaret Martin prior to her hip replacement in December 2009, and post-operatively we provided support and rehabilitation until she was independent again.

Margaret says:- Paul Cunningham Nurses, are all good, very helpful and they care for you.  I would recommend them to anyone in need of help.

Thankyou Margaret for your kind words.

From Mike and Phil Boone -

My wife was diagnosed with breast, lung and bone cancer in January 2009.  Her right hip joint collapsed in Feb 2009 resulting in her having to use a wheelchair.

She underwent both chemotherapy and radiotherapy but we were informed in September 2009 that all that could be done had been done and that she would be placed under the care of the Torrevieja home hospital department.

Although we have nothing but praise for the medical staff at the hospital we felt that we needed more help with all the things that the hospital does not cover.  We contacted Paul Cunningham Nurses and within one day Anne came to visit Phil and discussed in both a confident yet friendly manner Phils needs and worries, and this visit left us both feeling more relieved and confident with regards to her future needs.

Anne has visited us every day to carry out not only nursing duties but also to supply a friendly face and giving Phil the opportunity to chat with her as a good friend.  We feel that Anne has gone beyond being a nurse but has become a confidant and a friend.

Her caring manner, ready smile and vast experience have assisted both of us in preparing for the future.  We have nothing but praise for her help but most of all she will always have our grateful thanks for everything she has done for us in this stressful time.

From David Herbert -

Twelve months ago I was finding it difficult looking after my wheelchair bound wife (late wife) Caroline.  A friend of mine kindly insisted that I needed professional help and advised me to contact Paul Cunningham nurses.  I did and what good advice that was. Caroline suffered from MS but her condition was stable at the time.  What I needed was help with her care to allow me some respite.

After the initial assessment, Anne Muff came to the house twice a week.  That was the beginning of a wonderful friendship for Caroline and me.  Sadly,Caroline had problems in August this year (2009) and died on the thirteenth in Torrevieja hospital.

Thank you Anne for all you did for Caroline while she was still with us.  God bless you.  Many other people you come into contact with will come to appreciate you like Caroline and I did.

From Karen Mountfield -

I would like to make a very personal thank you for supporting my family and I when my Mother in law became ill here in Spain.

From the initial contact with Head Nurse Anne Muff to the daily nursing and care shown to my mother in law I cannot thank you all enough.

Each of the team showed care, dedication and professionalism to a woman who was confused and totally frightened.  What you also did for us as a family is give us much needed respite and build our confidence when we had to look after Mum.

Mum is safely back in the UK and speaks very highly of her Friends in Spain, you and the team.

Having received such care and kindness from everyone at Paul Cunningham Nurses I felt that I wanted to give something back.  I have now joined the team and look after the Admin in the PCN office in La Marina which is allowing me to give something back and also to spread the word about the good work you all do.

With grateful thanks Karen Mountfield

From Shaun & Robert Murphy -

In January of 2009, our beloved brother, Damian Murphy, was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. He fought a valiant but brutal battle with the disease and sadly passed away March 2, 2009. About a week before he died, his Oncologist told him his treatment was not working and the end was near. At that time, we were put in touch with the Paul Cunningham Nurses. It was important to Damian that he be allowed to spend his final days at home, surrounded by family, rather than in a hospital. The Paul Cunningham Nurses allowed that to happen. It is impossible to find the words to express what they meant to Damian and to our entire family during that final week. Their work is a calling, not a job and they are passionate about what they do. We will be eternally grateful to Gina and her team who helped us all during a very difficult time and were a tremendous support to our entire family.

Damian was an Irishman living in Spain and found himself facing a terminal illness in a country where he did not speak the language.  Finding out a group such as the Paul Cunningham Nurses existed was truly a Godsend.  The nurses who cared for Damian were Irish and English so there were no language barriers.  Their compassion, understanding, commitment and sense of humour helped Damian in his final days and we know he was greatly comforted by them.  He was alert and lucid until close to the end and appreciated their care - both physical and emotional. They treated him with such dignity and compassion, we cannot imagine how much more difficult his final days would have been without the help of these angels.  They were there whenever we needed them, morning, noon and night. It was obvious that they felt deeply for Damian and their sole focus was making him comfortable and allowing him to live as fully as possible until he finally left us.

The emotional and practical support they offered us, his family, was greatly appreciated as well. They helped us to understand what Damian was going through and how we could help ease his pain and fear.  They understood the pain and tremendous grief we were feeling and offered words of wisdom. They also helped advise us on the practicalities that had to be attended to when our brother finally passed.

Knowing the people they are, we were not at all surprised to see them at the service we held for Damian in Spain before we brought him back to Ireland for burial nor are we surprised that they have continued to stay in touch and offer support. Words cannot express the deep gratitude and connection we feel with these nurses and we will always be deeply indebted to them.

From Claire Owen -

"I write to show my great support and gratitude to the staff of Paul Cunningham Nurses especially in respect of Gina (Head Nurse).

I was nursing my terminally ill mum at home last year with the help of a couple of wonderful friends, when I saw an advertisement promoting the Paul Cunningham Nursing Charity.  Although I felt I was 'doing' a good job for my mum as she wanted to be at home, I wanted re-assurance that I was looking after my mum to the very best that I could.

Gina arranged a home visit with me where she assessed both mum and my needs and we set up a visiting schedule.

Gina would call as arranged, washing mum and also advising me on how to care for mum, whilst maintaining her dignity at the same time.  The help and advice of Gina and the Paul Cunningham Nurses was invaluable to me, as was knowing that I had support at hand.  Gina was also able to provide a link between myself and the pallative care doctor with regards to mum's medication.  When I had obstacles to overcome with mum, I could discuss them with Gina who then helped in resolving them.  Every visit Gina would also make a 'log' as to mum's condition and any advice given which again was invaluable to me as I was not present on all of Gina's visits, there being a friend at the house caring for mum if I was working.

I found Gina and her team of nurses to be most helpful and supportive at a very difficult time for myself.  Gina also supported me with my emotions concerning my mum, and was there to re-assure me when necessary.  Gina very much became a part of our lives for mum's last 3 weeks and mum used to ask if Gina was going to be visiting to wash her etc. and when I told her yes she would say "Good, I like Gina washing me, and talking to me", and a big smile would light up her face.

Once mum had passed The Paul Cunningham Nurses were still there as support for me should I need it.  The organisation definitley understands that the carer/family needs support even after a loved one has passed.  It may have been the end for mum in this life, but for me it was just the beginning of a very different life, one that took a lot of adjusting to, and to just know that I had support there made it a little bit easier.

With much thanks"

From Les & June Birt -

At Easter 2008 my 64 year old sister was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was admitted to Torrevieja Hospital for treatment.  Later we were told that the cancer was very aggressive and that the prognosis was not good.  In fact her life expectancy was no more than one year.  The emotions that we experienced were vast and varied.   We were aware that the care in the community that is available in the UK was not at our disposal, i.e. a District Nurse to administer the day to day care that would be required especially in the later stages.  On her discharge from hospital, my sister was allocated a doctor and nurse from the ‘Hospital at Home' team who called once a week to give palliative care and prescribe the necessary medicines which my wife and I had to administer which later included injections.  Courses of chemotherapy were also arranged.

Our concerns became greater so we searched the local English papers and saw an article about the Paul Cunningham Nurses and we made contact with them.  As a result, the senior nurse came to the house and assessed the situation.  We were advised that the organization would be able to assist us, free of charge, and that they would call once a week in the early stages but this would increase as necessary as the illness progressed.

The visits started with immediate effect and close liaison between them and the Hospital at Home team commenced and was maintained throughout.  As promised, the visits and care increased as required.  At one stage a large abscess manifest itself on my sister's side and she had to be taken to hospital for treatment and she was discharged within a few hours.  The after care for this was also undertaken by PCN.

By now, my sister required 24 hour attendance by my wife and I and the nurses attended on a daily basis.  In the last few days the visits were three to four times a day until the cancer finally took its toll in January of this year.

We will never forget the care and support that my sister received, as it was first class.  Also we are indebted to PCN for all the help and support that my wife and I received throughout in the way of advice and the reasons for the myriad of emotions (anger, frustration, guilt etc) that we experienced.

Thankyou PCN for all that you have done for our family.
